Hopefully you are a little different than many riders and get out and ride a few times during the winter months. If you don’t, take care of that cool ride and take a few simple battery maintenance steps to save money from having to purchase a new battery sooner than is necessary.
Motorcycles when they are not running, have a small load on the battery. A fully charged battery at stand still, with the ignition off should measure about 13 to 13.5 volts across the terminals. If you dont do anything for a couple months, this will drop slightly on a good battery because of what I just mentioned concerning the load. If you want to know what a load is, ask away. To keep the battery in good shape, here are some steps:
- Remove the battery from the bike. Mayers Motorcycles will help you do this.
- Install or connect a battery maintainer. There are a variety of these devices and connections. These monitor the voltage from the battery and once it goes below the regulated point I mentioned above, it turns a charger on until the battery is back at the 13.5 volt point. Mayers carries all brands of battery tenders starting at $29.99.
