The most common type of service work we’ve had since opening is getting motorcycles and scooters ready for riding after being in storage for years. One item that is required during this type of maintenance is draining old fuel from the tank and fuel system.
Most gasoline has ethanol added to it. When ethanol is mixed with gasoline, and then left to sit for a long period of time, it separates from the gasoline and binds with water. This becomes a deadly mixture affecting rubber, plastic tubes, and the engine itself. If you have ever smelled spoiled gasoline, the most appropriate word I can think of to describe it, is ‘LETHAL’. One of the techs spilled some in the service bay and I could not get rid of the smell for weeks. At first, I thought it might be permanent.
If you suspect you won’t be riding for a couple months, purchase a fuel stabilizer. It takes a few minutes to do. We carry the fuel stabilizer at the store, so that makes it even easier for you. We offer additional winterizing procedures as well, including storage. Stop in and see us soon.
